If you have an Internet-based business or run a retail e-commerce website, you will need online credit card processing. Most of your potential customers will not want to make the effort to send a check or money order for an online purchase. After setting up an online merchant account and credit card payment gateway, you can give your customers the option to purchase goods and services instantly and securely with the click of the mouse.
What You Need to Begin Processing Credit Cards Online
In order to sell goods and services effectively and securely online, you will need the following things:
1. An Internet Merchant Account. A merchant account is a type of bank account that allows businesses to accept payments by debit or credit cards An Internet merchant account is specifically designed to handle online payment processing of credit cards.
2. A Payment Gateway. A payment gateway like PSIGate, Beanstream, or PayFlow Pro allows an online business to accept credit cards securely and easily through its website by providing the infrastructure and security systems necessary to transmit transaction information. Basically, an online payment gateway operates much like a stand alone credit card terminal, except it uses the Internet instead of a phone line.
A Virtual terminal on your PC is usually a standard offering with Payment Gateways. To take it to the next level and integrate your website payment processing automatically, see Shopping Cart software.
3. Shopping Cart Software. Shopping cart software programs automatically connect your Web site to the payment gateway, allowing you to accept credit card payments immediately. There are numerous shopping cart solutions out there that come with a wide range of features, such as easy customization, one page check out, and a collection of powerful administrative tools.

What are online merchant accounts?
Choosing a good service provider for your online merchant accounts is central to Payment Processing. Your e-commerce merchant account issuer is your key link to the credit card companies. They’ll determine the type of payments that you can accept and handle other essential services – like settling funds to your business bank account, and establishing credit terms with the card companies.
Online merchant accounts are not retail accounts. If you already have retail accounts, you’ll still need to sign up for e-commerce merchant account services.
-
The online customer finds the merchant’s website and adds products to their shopping cart. When they are ready to check out, they enter their billing information. - If the merchant does not have a secure page, the customer can be transferred to a secure payment gateway. If the merchant does have a secure site, then the information will be “passed” to the payment gateway without the customer ever leaving the merchant’s site.
- Once the billing information has made it to the payment gateway, it is then transmitted to the processor.
- The processor passes the information from the online processing payment gateway onto the bank that issued the credit card, which verifies that the card is valid and that the amount requested is available on the card.
- The bank sets aside the purchase amount for the merchant, then sends back an approval number or a decline message to the processor.
- Within 3-15 seconds, the information in steps 2-6 is passed back to the payment gateway.
- The gateway passes the approval code back to the merchant’s site or, if the merchant does not have a secure site, gives the customer their approval information. At this point, the merchant can also choose to have the payment gateway email the customer a payment receipt.
- Final payment is secured and is deposited in the e-commerce merchant’s account. It typically takes two business days from the time of the original transaction for the funds to reach the merchant’s checking account.
Discount Rates
Unlike what the name implies, a discount rate is not a price cut. A discount rate is a percent fee that is charged on all credit card or Interac transactions. All merchant account providers charge a discount rate. Typically this fee is higher in an online environment than at a retail store. Many providers charge “unqualified” discount rates. This means that the discount rate may vary depending on the transaction scenario. (Your customer chooses not to provide a CVD number? The discount rate goes up.) Additional fees may also be tacked on to merchant account services. Look for references to minimum monthly rates, batch settlement fees and other recurring service fees in merchant account contracts. CardSolve online merchant accounts have “bundled rates” which means that the discount rate is static. It also means there are no additional costs associated with our merchant account services.
